SCHOLARSHIPS

The LAA Gracious ANON Scholarships have given over $2500 in Awards, in 2021, to local graduating seniors interested in continuing their education in Art. We also offered a free year of full membership and waived entries for winners along with mentoring opportunities and an exhibit of their work.

Gracious ANONScholarship Application

These scholarships are directed towards graduating students pursuing a career in Fine Art.

Each of the four $500 scholarship recipients may use the funds to purchase supplies or tuition needs for secondary education.

Application for our award is based on the actual submission process used by arts organizations like LAA, for juried exhibitions here in the Lehigh Valley. The scholarship process is designed to guide the students in proper, established, fine arts exhibition practices. This information is invaluable to young artists to help them gain the confidence to exhibit. We also hope this process will help students with portfolio preparation to institutions they are interested in attending.

Active mentoring and inclusion of young and upcoming artists is a goal of LAA. A prospective recipient would have access to willing LAA mentors for guidance through the process. We are aiming to help young artists overcome the hurdle of acceptance in the art community as a peer.

Requirements:

  • Recipient must apply, be accepted, and plans to attend a Fine Arts Program in a secondary educational institution in the fall following graduation.

Application Process:

  • Prospective students should submit two works of their own conception and execution. Any photo reference used to produce the pieces must be the student’s own. Teacher guidance must be limited. (No photography or solely computer-generated work is accepted by LAA from our exhibitors)

  • A short, one-paragraph bio, introducing the applicant, with a list of file names should be submitted with the application. (This will be used in the promotion of winners) Student’s entry acknowledges permission to have their work photographed or videotaped for promotional use.

  • Multi-media, three-dimensional and sculptural work or two-dimensional work in any medium are acceptable. High-resolution jpeg images of the work must be submitted. More than one image for each piece may be submitted to ensure the best quality view. (Angled shots to eliminate glare for instance) The image should be 300 dpi and no larger than 10 x 8 image size.

  • File should be titled FirstName_LastName_School_Title. (Example: Elena_Johnson_Freedom_LightandShadow)

  • Help preparing files for submission may be provided if needed.

  • Notification of award will be sent prior to May 15th.

Size Limitations:

The unframed work must measure no more than a width of 30” maximum by a height of 50” maximum. A maximum depth for three-dimensional work is 20” at the deepest point. Planning, on the student’s part, is crucial when conceiving the work to avoid entries exceeding these dimensions.

Exhibition of Grant Winners:

LAA will highlight the grant winners’ pieces in an exhibit in the Luckenbach Mill at the conclusion of the Summer Exhibition Season. They will also be highlighted on LAA social media. (Instagram and Facebook) The exhibition will be announced as we approach the grant dispersal period.

Help and direction, in preparing the work for exhibition, will be provided to the winners (example: framing and wiring for hanging) as part of the process of learning exhibition practices. We would also extend an invitation to participate as a volunteer in the Drop Off/Jurying/Installation of a major exhibition to learn the process involved.

Ongoing Mentorship:

The gift that keeps on giving…

LAA will provide free membership to the winners for the duration of a year and waive entry fees for LAA juried shows up to a year after graduation. All member privileges will be extended to the winners. Our hope is to encourage the recipients, help them gain valuable knowledge and confidence about exhibition practices throughout the Lehigh Valley.

The application may be sent after March 1st and no later than April 30th of the student’s graduating year. Notification of award will be sent prior to May 15th.
